Conventional X-ray techniques can be expected to give positive results in only 20% of severe cases of pulmonary embolism. Pulmonary perfusion scan, however, can detect a higher percentage in addition to detecting the region of decreased perfusion with high sensitivity.

La scintigraphie pulmonaire de perfusion est de réalisation technique simple. Elle consiste en une injection intraveineuse généralement dans une veine du pli du coude, d'une suspension dans un sérum physiologique, de microsphères d'albumine humaine rendues préalablement radioactives. Le radio-isotope le plus utilisé à l'heure actuelle est le technétium (99mTc) (...) Ainsi cet examen permet de mettre en évidence des lésions d'exclusion circulatoire pulmonaires consécutives, par exemple, à des embolies, à un cancer ou à une bronchopathie chronique.
